"ENVOKASYON" EXHIBITION BY ANAIS VERSPAN AT TROPIQUES ATRIUM, FORT-DE-FRANCE
06 October 2026
Fort-de-France

Anais Verspan, *Envokasyon*, at the Jean-Paul Cesaire Gallery (La Veranda). *ENVOKASYON* is an invitation to summon the visible and invisible memories that inhabit the Guadeloupean territory. The title refers to the act of invoking: calling upon ancestors, landscapes, traditional skills, the silences of history, and the forces that continue to shape our present. It is also an invitation to listen to what objects, landscapes, and materials have to say to us. The exhibition transforms art into a space of transformation where the plant world, memory, and the artistic gesture converge to open up new narratives. It examines colonial legacies, celebrates ancestral craftsmanship through a sensory tapestry, and affirms the capacity of contemporary creation to transform the symbols, materials, and wounds of history into a sensory and shared experience. Anais Verspan After three years of study at the IRAVM (Regional Institute of Visual Arts of Martinique, 2001–2004), Anais VERSPAN (b. 1980, Guadeloupe) embarked on a career in fashion design by opening her own “Afro Exentrik concept showroom.” She made her debut by exhibiting her paintings for the first time at the Carrefour des Arts in Le Gosier (2009) and followed that with her first solo exhibition, “Bigidiplakata” (2010), at the Imagin’Art Gallery in Sainte-Rose. Since then, she has continued to present her work in both solo and group exhibitions at the local, national, and international levels (Belgium, Senegal, Martinique, Germany, Monaco, Portugal). As a multidisciplinary visual artist, Anais VERSPAN draws on her own analysis of the “I” and the “Self” as her primary subject matter and raw material, turning her gaze outward to explore bodies as repositories of memory, matrimony, “blackness,” and Afro-descendance, human and environmental ecologies, as well as contemporary societal shifts on our Caribbean islands. Among her solo exhibitions or “solo experiences” are KARATA (2014) at Fort Fleur d’Epee, Guadeloupe, and Et si l’espace museal était une Kaz? (2016), a carte blanche exhibition at Musarth. These two exhibitions demonstrated the maturity of her work in painting and photography. Anais VERSPAN is rapidly becoming a recognized painter and continues to “perform” her visual language through installations, photography, contemporary dance, collaborations, and research.... Her aesthetic universe is distinguished by the interplay between abstraction and figuration, black and color, matte and glossy, flat surfaces and depth. Her works masterfully reconcile materials and contrasts, like the two halves of a single duality oscillating between the present and the past, heritage and transmission, cultural traces and individual experiences. Exhibition Hours Tuesday through Friday: 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM Saturday: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM Call 0596 70 79 31 for school groups and other groups. Guided tours available for groups of 10 or more. VISIT TO THE CDST, SAINT PIERRE
06 October 2026
Saint-Pierre

EXHIBITION: "SOUND! PLAY WITH WAVES" July 2026–February 2027 – CDST Sound will hold no more secrets for you! How is sound created? How do waves travel? Why do some sounds seem lower, higher, louder, or softer to us? Through a fun, interactive exhibition accessible to everyone, the CDST—Center for the Discovery of Science and the Earth—invites you to explore the fascinating world of vibrations, waves, and sound phenomena that surround us every day. Hands-on activities, experiments, discoveries, and science games will allow young and old alike to learn while having fun and to better understand this invisible—yet omnipresent—phenomenon. An original exhibition where you can listen, test, experiment, and discover science in a whole new way. SARGASSUM: THE GREAT INVASION An investigation by Marie Briere de la Hosseraye Once rare, sargassum now invades the shores of the Caribbean. Foul-smelling and toxic, it poses health, environmental, and economic challenges. A Science Actualités exhibition designed by the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie – Universcience The year 2025 will be remembered for the exceptionally high volume of Sargassum washups in Martinique. In a report published on December 24, Météo-France cited volumes and areas never before observed since satellite monitoring began in 2011. THE SOIL Soils provide resources for human populations; they are home to exceptional biodiversity, largely unknown to the general public; they perform regulatory functions (such as flood control), as well as water storage and purification; they also play a major role in carbon sequestration. Beneath our feet, the soil of Martinique tells a story of volcanoes, tropical rains, and forests. These soils allow forests to grow, crops to thrive, and provide a foundation for all our structures. They are an essential resource… but a fragile one. FLORA AND NATURAL HABITATS OF MONTAGNE PELÉE AND THE PITONS DU NORD Natural habitats refer to a homogeneous area where several plant species grow together. Understanding natural habitats means taking an interest in both the species and the ecological conditions in which they thrive. Several types of habitats can be distinguished, including forests, thickets, grasslands, and coastal areas, which may be muddy, rocky, or sandy. All these habitats have specific characteristics and vary depending on rainfall. Exhibition provided by the National Botanical Conservatory of Martinique: “Deadly Volcanoes” (permanent exhibition), produced by the National Museum of Natural History. On May 8, 1902, the eruption of Mount Pelée killed 28,000 people and devastated the town of Saint-Pierre, reminding us that it is one of France’s most dangerous volcanoes. The “Deadly Volcanoes” exhibition explores all aspects of Mount Pelée’s volcanism, its geodynamic context, the history of the volcano’s formation, details of the catastrophe of May 8, 1902—including a precise chronology of the various events related to the eruption as well as anecdotes about the survivors—the specific eruptive characteristics of this volcano, and volcanic monitoring. The explanatory panels are accompanied by photographs taken after the disaster by Alfred Lacroix, a model of Mount Pelée with a cross-section showing the volcano’s interior, and a glossary detailing terms used in volcanology. The CDST’s Mineralogy Gallery (permanent exhibition) The display cases feature rocks and fossils from Martinique as well as samples from various regions of the world, accompanied by panels summarizing the main concepts of geology: Mineralogy – Paleontology - Petrology. Rocks from Martinique and around the world held by the CDST, along with their characteristics—click on this link: roches-du-cdst. Martinique from the Sky (permanent) Take a bird’s-eye view of Martinique with the 1:10,000-scale map of the island, measuring 6 m x 6.30 m, created by assembling 1,600 orthophotos taken from an airplane. These images showcase the island’s great diversity of landscapes, human settlement patterns, and land use. Visitors can navigate freely across the map to locate specific places, their homes, the CDST, and more. Major Hazards (Permanent) A hazard is a random, potentially dangerous event that becomes a major risk when it occurs in a location where human, economic, or environmental interests are at stake. DOCUMENTARY SCREENINGS AT THE CDST, SAINT PIERRE
06 October 2026
Saint-Pierre

Documentary: Volcanoes of the Caribbean (52 min) Running time: 52' The film "Volcanoes of the Caribbean" provides a detailed analysis of the May 8, 1902, eruption that destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre in Martinique and the 1995 eruptive crisis on the island of Montserrat. This film shows how, thanks to the work of Professor Alfred Lacroix, a concept was born: that of a pyroclastic flow and a Peléan eruption. If you have trouble visualizing what a pyroclastic flow is, imagining its destructive power, and understanding why nearly 30,000 people were killed in Saint-Pierre in less than 3 minutes on May 8, 1902... Come see the screening of the documentary film. (Volcanoes of the Caribbean) This film explores volcanic activity in the Lesser Antilles arc, focusing on major events in the history of each island’s volcanoes, the eruption of Mount Pelée on May 8, 1902, and that of La Soufrière on Montserrat in 1995. - In the first part, the reconstruction of the May 8, 1902, disaster is very well explained through a combination of archival footage and computer-generated imagery. The film’s value lies in the fact that it addresses various aspects—political, geographical, and geological—providing a comprehensive view of this disaster and offering historical and scientific insights. - In the second part: Volcanic activity on other Caribbean islands is discussed, with explanations focusing in particular on Montserrat’s Soufrière, Kick’m Jenny, and Guadeloupe’s Soufrière... Documentary "Earthquakes and Tsunamis" Produced by "L'esprit sorcier" Why, when, and how does the earth shake? Documentary “Inside Volcanoes” Produced by “L’esprit sorcier” How are volcanoes formed, where are they found, and should we be afraid of them? Hours of Operation Open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last admission at 4:00 PM). Open on the following holidays: Easter Sunday, Victory Day (May 8), Ascension Thursday, Pentecost Sunday, Bastille Day (July 14), Assumption, August 15; Armistice Day, November 11.
