Rivière-Salée Sud

Rivière-Salée

Lower part of the Caribbean coast, between the plain of Lamentin and the Trois-Ilets, the commune of Rivière-Salée obviously takes its name from the upwelling of sea water into the course of the river, from Génipa Bay.

Long attached to Trois-Ilets, the two districts of Petit Bourg and Grand Bourg , which developed around their sugar factories, were united to form the commune of Rivière-Salée around 1849.

Sugar cane is truly the queen crop of this region. Even though the factories stopped smoking in the early 70s, you can still see "habitations", structures dating back to the 19th century.

The old Petit-Bourg factory was the setting for the film "la Rue Cases-Nègres" by Euzhan Palcy, adapted from the novel by local writer Joseph Zobel.

From its geographical location, Rivière-Salée hosts a mangrove rich in mangrove trees and other "mantous" crabs, which you can discover thanks to organized tours.
