Temple Hindou
sainte-marie
A legacy of Indian immigration following the abolition of slavery in 1848, this temple dedicated to the central Hindu goddess Mirimman, known as Malièmin in Martinique, bears witness to the presence of descendants of Indian workers in Sainte-Marie to this day. Authorised by the owners of the time, the Despointes consorts, Indian immigrants built a small hut around 1858 on the Union dwelling where they worked (now the Saint-James plantations), which served as a Hindu temple, using makeshift materials modelled on those used by slaves. It was rebuilt in 1985 on the initiative of the Indian families living in the neighbourhood, as well as Hindu devotees from Martinique.
