Inspiring experience
This former 17th-century sugar refinery in Sainte Marie used to produce cane juice for distilling tafia, the ancestor of rum.
Not far from the Saint James dwelling, the Sucrerie La Salle is now a place for exhibitions and remembrance: discover the historical journey from sugar cane to the guild house, where the first rums were distilled.
In a magnificent tropical garden, and to round off the walk in style, let yourself be tempted by a tasting: on sale in the Sucrerie boutique, the La Salle cuvées, in confidential quantities, are bottled and waxed by hand. Since 2023, the Boutique de la Sucrerie has been home to the J.Bally range of rums and its vintage bottles, the brand's emblem.
You can get there by car or by train from the Musée du Rhum.
