Inspiring experience
Saint-Pierre, the cultural capital of Martinique, built a theatre in 1786. It was a major venue for social events, and was also home to the coloured freemen. A hotbed of Creolisation, it led to the emergence of new musical styles such as the biguine. Always up to date, it also programmed the greatest Parisian operas, plays and ballets. Destroyed by the cyclone of 1891, it was restored in 1900 just before the eruption. The remains of the auditorium still retain their extraordinary acoustics.
