Would you like to do something for the planet?

Let me guess, you're looking for the best time to come to Martinique? You've come to the right place! I've been lucky enough to discover the island at several different times of the year, and I've kept a few notes for myself about the highlights of each month.

In Martinique, it's summer all year round and, believe me, from January to December, my island of hearts promises a unique experience. How about May?

Let me tell you, a trip to Martinique in May is pure bliss! A very pleasant climate, landscapes bursting with color and almost deserted beaches, you're sure to fall under the spell. Grab your sunglasses, I'm taking you away!

What's the weather like in Martinique in May?

A gentle transition to summer and the rainy season

My very professional little weather info to introduce you a little:

In Martinique, it's summer all year round, but there are said to be "two seasons": the Lent, or dry season, between December and May, and the Wintering, or rainy season between June and November. May thus marks the transition between the dry and rainy seasons.

The climate remains warm and pleasant, with maximum temperatures hovering around 30 degrees and minimums varying around 23 degrees. Rainfall is beginning to increase slightly, particularly in the north of the island and in places like Sainte-Marie, but it remains moderate and often short-lived. The weather alternates between beautiful sunny days and a few passing showers, which cool the atmosphere without disrupting activities.

The average water temperature is ideal for enjoying the beaches, hovering around 28 degrees. Historically, the month of May offers an excellent compromise between tropical heat and moderate humidity, perfect for exploring the island without suffering from overly heavy weather.

You'll see, in May, Martinique is at its best! Just imagine: sun-drenched days with temperatures between 25 and 30°C (just what you need to feel on vacation), and balmy nights around 23°C. As you'll have guessed, you can already take the little sweater out of your suitcase!

You'll see, you'll find yourself in the middle of a real tropical tableau. And the icing on the cake? The sea at 28°C. A giant hot tub. For me, at least, it's yes every day!

What to do in Martinique in May?

Explore the iconic beaches

Ah, the beaches of Martinique... They deserve a chapter of their own. In May, for me, they're just the best: less crowded, more peaceful, and still breathtakingly beautiful. Here are my favorite must-do beaches during your trip:

  • Les Salines in Sainte-Anne: Imagine a white sand beach lined with coconut palms. It's the perfect cliché (and it's even better in person!). If you like long walks on the sand, this is the place to go. Take the opportunity to try a little homemade coconut sorbet, sold by local vendors (you'll thank me).
  • Anse Dufour and Anse Noire: Two little nuggets side by side. If you dream of swimming with sea turtles, this is the place to go. Magical, isn't it? Bring your mask and snorkel and let yourself be surprised. Here's a hint: I hope you don't mind the multicolored fish?
  • Grande Anse aux Anses-d'Arlet: The ideal place to don your mask and snorkel. There are so many fish of every color, you won't believe your eyes. It's also one of the best spots to enjoy a dinner with your feet in the sand at sunset.
  • And if you're looking for an even wilder experience, head for Anse Couleuvre, a secluded black sand beach surrounded by rainforest. It's the perfect place for those who love adventure and tranquility!

Go on a nature adventure

Loving nature? In May, Martinique becomes a veritable tropical paradise. Everything is green, everything is flowery, everything is alive. For me, it doesn't get any better than this!

  • Set out to discover Montagne Pelée: yes, the famous one, the island's iconic volcano! Climbing its slopes is sporty, but believe me, the view up there is simply... Incredible! On a clear day, you can even see neighboring islands such as Dominica. Bring good shoes, a bottle of water and your camera.
  • The Jardin de Balata, of course: a stroll around Balata is like stepping into a dream. Exotic flowers everywhere, majestic trees and suspended footbridges... Get your camera ready, you're going to shoot! My little tip: take the time to chat with the guides on site: they love to share their knowledge of tropical plants. So interesting.
  • Go for a hike with a view of the Trace des Caps: a breathtaking hike between wild beaches and cliffs. Take your time, every corner of this trail is a surprise. The ideal program: take a little picnic and pause on one of the secret little coves along the way.
  • And why not try a rainforest walk with a guide? Some even offer night-time outings to observe fireflies and listen to the sounds of nature. Thrills guaranteed!

Initiate yourself to water activities

In May, it's impossible to resist the call of Martinique's warm, calm waters. What's more, Martinique is bordered to the west by the Caribbean Sea and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, has 350 km of coastline and around 117 beaches and coves... Which means 117 different opportunities to taste the water, swim in the crystal-clear waters, relax in the pristine white or volcanic black sand, discover the white seabed or try your hand at surfing or kiteboarding. So, shall we jump in the water?

  • Try paddleboarding: Imagine yourself gliding across turquoise water, in the middle of a dream setting. Try it out at Anse Michel, and you'll hear all about it. For beginners, it's also a great way to discover the seabed. Practical, isn't it?
  • Don't miss out on scuba diving: the Rocher du Diamant, the wrecks off Saint-Pierre... Martinique's seabed is spectacular. Breathtaking even (but not for too long)! So incredible, in fact, that a word of advice: remember to book in advance for the popular sites.
  • Go kayaking in the Génipa mangrove: a zen experience in the heart of a unique ecosystem. Perfect for disconnecting and watching tropical birds.
  • If you're more the adventurous type, try your hand at kitesurfing on the beaches of Tartane or Le Vauclin. The winds are perfect for learning, or perfecting your skills if you're already an ace.

Dive into the heart of local traditions and events

If, like me, you like to take advantage of your travels to meet people, party, sing, dance and discover the real life of the places you go to, you'll love Martinique. The island has a unique, truly vibrant culture, many traditions and is lively all year round. And if you go in May, you won't be disappointed! You'll see, it's a great opportunity to meet new people and better understand Martinique and its traditions! In May, you can enjoy:

Labor Day (May 1): it's a festive day when everyone's out and about. Atmosphere guaranteed! Take a trip to the local markets to sample specialties like butter bread with spiced hot chocolate.
Pentecost, which is an unmissable tradition in Martinique: picnics on the beach with the family. You've got to try it, and if you're offered a small glass of rum, say "thank you" and enjoy!
Don't miss the craft festivals that showcase local know-how. This is your chance to bring back unique souvenirs, such as handmade jewelry or rhum arrangé.
For food lovers, don't miss Sainte-Marie's gastronomic week, an unmissable event for discovering Martinique's culinary wealth!

The pros and cons of Martinique in May

Come on, to sum up and help you choose:

The island's big pluses in May:

A dream climate: Sunshine and warmth, without excess.
Breathtaking scenery: Nature is in top form thanks to light rainfall.
Low crowds: You'll feel like you've got the island all to yourself.
Low prices: Flights and accommodation are often more affordable.

The island's little minus in May:

The onset of humidity: if you're sensitive to it, hydrate well and you'll be fine.

My practical tips for a successful stay in May

  • Prepare your suitcase according to the weather: in May, the climate in Martinique is mild and pleasant, but remember to take a few precautions to really enjoy your trip! As said before, minimum temperatures vary between 23 and 25 degrees depending on location, with maximum temperatures reaching 30 degrees during the day. It's always hot! The weather can be changeable, with occasional rain showers refreshing the atmosphere, particularly in the north of the island and around Sainte-Marie. So remember to pack a light jacket for rain and breathable clothing suited to the tropical climate.
  • Think your activities according to the weather: mornings are often drier, so give preference to hiking and excursions early in the day. With average sea temperatures of around 28 degrees, it's the perfect time to explore the beaches and enjoy water sports like paddleboarding or diving. For a truly authentic discovery of Martinique, don't hesitate to visit Saint-Pierre and the Caravelle peninsula, places rich in history and spectacular scenery. If you're planning to go hiking, bear in mind that temperatures vary according to altitude. In the north, around Mont Pelée, it can be cooler, so a light windbreaker may be useful. As the weather in May is sometimes unpredictable, it's always a good idea to check the average rainfall before planning a long excursion.
  • Don't skimp on sun protection: your 3 essentials, hat, sun cream and a good bottle of water in the bag. In Martinique, you don't have a minute to lose!
  • Rent a car: for me, it's essential to be free to get around and explore every corner of the island to your heart's content!
  • Take good shoes for hiking and walking: the trails can be a little damp in May, but it's worth it!"
  • Finally, remember to protect yourself from mosquitoes, especially at the end of the day, by using a suitable mosquito repellent.

And there you have it, you're all set for any situation!!

My summary: May is the perfect month to fall in love with Martinique. Heavenly beaches, lush nature, a relaxed atmosphere and endless discoveries... What more could you ask for? Believe me, you won't regret it. So let's make up our minds and take off!
