A career path steeped in family tradition

Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your background?

I'm Séverine Moustin, a professional make-up beautician for over 26 years. I created S. Cosmetics, Martinique's first make-up brand, nine years ago. I grew up in this world: my godmother was a beautician, as was my mother, who founded one of the first private beauty training schools in Martinique. I naturally followed in their footsteps, but developed my own specialty: artistic make-up.

At the age of 13, I was already working on patronal celebrations. After my baccalaureate and a CAP in aesthetics, I was doing make-up for television by the age of 18. Then I went to Paris for two years to learn more about make-up artistry. I had some wonderful professional experiences there.

A return to Martinique, between roots and ambition

Why did you choose to settle in Martinique?

I came back to Martinique thinking I'd stay temporarily, but I decided to put down roots here. I opened my first salon in 2005, offering nail care, esthetics and make-up. I built my reputation locally, with the aim of spreading it elsewhere. This positioning enabled me to be approached by outside productions, convinced that I was still working in audiovisual.

Do you have any vivid memories of your early days?

As a little girl, I used to hide in my mother's institute to watch her at work. With my godmother, I learned the importance of customer care, respect and rigor. These experiences have shaped my vision of the profession.

Creativity inspired by Martinique

What role does Martinique play in your designs?

The island is my anchor, my base. My collections are unlike anything you'll find elsewhere, especially in autumn and winter. I incorporate local notes like coconut, vanilla or caramel, particularly in my lip glosses. All S. Cosmetics visuals are created here with real models from the West Indies - Martinique, Guadeloupe, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire. My inspiration comes from home. I started watching television when I was 18. Then I went to Paris for two years to learn more about make-up artistry. I had some wonderful professional experiences there.

Martinique, an island of well-being and breathing

What makes Martinique such a rejuvenating place?

Our strength lies in the proximity of varied landscapes. In just a few minutes, I can go from an urban environment to a natural setting: a stroll along the Malecon, feet in the water at Plage de la Française, a jaunt to Jardin de Balata or Absalon. Monday is my day off: if I have time, I take my beach bag, go for a swim and pick up my son from school. This flexibility, this close nature, it's a real luxury.

Do you have any favorite places to recharge your batteries?

Yes, I have two. The first is Diamant beach, where I make important decisions. There, my thoughts get organized, and I take action on the way down. The second is at my brother's house in Le Cap, in Le Marin. His house on the heights overlooks the bay and offers a view of Saint Lucia. There are chickens, fruit trees and a soothing atmosphere. It's my refuge.

Wellness, between personal rituals and flagship products

What's your secret to well-being?

On the inside, my ritual is gustatory: a good ti nain morue at No Stress Bo Lanme in Fort-de-France, by the water, with pelicans and a punch. This traditional meal is part of my equilibrium. I also like lambi soup on Fridays and grilled meats on Saturday evenings. Martinique's cultural mix is reflected in its cuisine.

When it comes to make-up, my must-have trio S. Cosmetics: the cover duo (concealer, corrector, foundation), the 2-in-1 powder and a good mascara for the charming touch. Essentials that combine effectiveness, versatility and aesthetics, designed here, for here.
